Commissions

A commissioned piece is another way for the collector or client to acquire an original painting by an artist. Commissioned paintings can be based on elements from an existing painting or the commissioned piece can be inspired by various elements found in multiple paintings. Specific musical scores or backgrounds can be used, based on the collector’s favorite interests.

Here’s how the commissioned painting process works:

Pencil drawing, Betsy Bauer

  • A conversation between the artist and client begins the process. The client is asked to select a few existing paintings they like after viewing the website. A studio visit can be arranged as well. This process helps the artist understand the overall feeling the client would like to achieve from the commission. Additionally, specific elements from these selections are discussed to further form the initial idea and to determine what the client would like to see or not see in the piece. After this initial dialogue exact size and price of the painting can be determined. The time frame for completion of the painting will also be decided.
  • Upon agreement of the direction and price of the piece, the artist creates a small pencil sketch of the proposed painting based on all the information that the client or collector has given. As color is developed with many glazes and determined over the course of the creation of the painting, the sketch will be black and white but color preferences will be discussed.
  • When the sketch meets the client’s approval, 1/2 of the agreed upon price for the piece is due to start the painting.
  • Once the painting is complete, the balance is paid in full and the painting is shipped to the client. All shipping and crating costs are paid by client.
  • A completed painting based on the proposed sketch is property of the client. Once the painting is finished there are no revisions or refunds.

Many collectors and clients have found that commissioning work directly from the artist is an engaging and rewarding experience. Whether for a private or public collection, a commissioned painting offers the benefit of a very personalized work of art.

Musica di Carmen, Betsy Bauer

"People say that you should never buy art without your spouse, but in this case, the risk definitely paid off ... and then some. As a gift and as a work of art, it was more than I had hoped for. My wife was beyond surprised and truly touched. Indeed, many joyous tears.

Thanks for the special personal touch. The opera cards and warm note were wonderful. We, of course, now need to find the best place to hang the painting ... but this is a great problem to figure out."

La Strada di Olivi, Betsy Bauer

"La Strada di Olivi is an incredibly beautiful work of art! We were so proud to be able to present such a beautiful painting to our son on his 40th birthday. He loves it, as does his wife and our entire family! He is so thrilled to own another of your paintings. He hung it right away in a spot that seemed made for the painting.

Thanks so much, Betsy, for creating such a lovely and memorable painting for our son’s 'big 40th' and being part of the surprise. It was a wonderful celebration."

- M. Bartlett, Cincinnati, OH

Lily Rising II, Betsy Bauer

"Thanks so much for Lily II .... it is a lovely complement to the other two pieces, achieving the desired effect of a triptych .... really perfect for the spot where it hangs!

I also appreciate your professionalism in responding to my request and delivering."

- B. Singer, Newton, MA
